Located in the western part of Agena
district of Gushikawa city,
Camp
McTureous, is equipped with family residential facilities, sports
facilities and an elementary school. Named for
Private Robert
M. McTureous, Jr., 21. Robert Miller McTureous, Jr had been a Marine for
only nine months when on 7 June 1945, on Okinawa, although critically
wounded, he instantly risked his own life to divert fire from a group of
his wounded comrades. He died at sea four days later of massive
wounds and loss of blood.
He was born
in Altoona, Florida, 26 March 1924. Young McTureous attended the primary
schools of Altoona and graduated from high school at Umatilla, Florida, in
1941. Camp McTureous is located in the northern portion of Okinawa.
