Got started while deployed on USS Spartanburg County from Morehead City, NC to Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia in support of Desert Shield/Storm.  Brought ship's station out of mothballs, repaired dipole antenna, fabricated directional antenna and provided MARSGrams & phone patches for Marines and Sailors while afloat from Aug 1990 - Jan 1991 when we went ashore.

When I returned form the Middle East, got own call sign and operated on local Net, passing messages for Marines, Sailors and their families in the areas around MCAS Cherry Point and MCB Camp Lejeune, NC. Once I retired and moved to Jacksonville FL, set up station and worked the local net.

Very Satisfying. Today, seems everyone has Internet/email access and radio is obsolete....
