I'm apparently listed as an
operator at AI8AU, but I was never officially assigned to that MARS
station. I was a ground radio tech (30454) with the 21st Tactical Air
Support Squadron (TASS) at Nha Trang AB in 1968-69, and the MARS station
was down the street. I helped out at the station, but only in a
volunteer capacity. At that time my ham radio callsign was WB2EDW.
I'm afraid I don't remember the names of anyone I worked with there, and
the only stateside MARS station I recall using from there was Barry
Goldwater's, AFA7UGA. I'd be glad to hear from any friends or
acquaintances from that time, so please refresh my memory!
GIs using satellite phones and email cannot
appreciate the pleasure of talking to the folks at home over a noisy HF
connection (we operated just above the 40-meter ham band), and having to
say 'over' when you were finished speaking. You sure realized how far
from home you were, as if you didn't already know. -
