Steve Allen, WB4PFE, of Woodstock,
Georgia, died Sunday December 9 in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, reportedly as a
result of a heart attack. He was 47. A CNN satellite technician, Allen
had been in Afghanistan since mid-November to install satellite links in
Jalalabad and Tora Bora. Any of the CNN live broadcasts you may have seen
from these areas came from Steve's installation.
An ARRL member for 11 years, Allen
was a member of the Pine Log Mountain Repeater Group, Air Force MARS, and
the Base Support Team at Dobbins Army Reserve Base. The Base Support Team
is a group of hams within MARS that volunteer to provide first-response
communications at the site of downed aircraft. Survivors include his
wife, Cathy. A memorial service was held December 15 in Marietta, Georgia.
