I had been a
civilian Army MARS op stateside, as ADØDGG. After being drafted, operated
AAØWBD running patches to the RVN at FT. Leonard Wood. Ran a zillion
patches from the 4th Division (Army) station at Camp Enari during 1969.
Was sent TDY in mid-year to the Pleiku AFVN station (on-air radio/TV
talent), established AB8AS "portable" from on Dragon Mountain, the
location of the AFVN FM-TV detachment. Stateside stations treated me
as a bona-fide station, and ran patches for us also. Used a stock
Collins KWM-2 (infrequent commo use at AFVN) to a 13 Mhz dipole. Etc.
Patching from
the RVN required the calls be closely monitored for security. Hearing a
thousand really sad stories going back and forth made it seem not so
difficult for me...as in "it could be worse." Hearing too many " Dear
John" phone patches eventually becomes rather sad.
I'd ramble on
forever. 'Nuff said.
