AB8AQ - housed
in Phu Bai with the 8th RRFS cover for the Army Security Agency.
There was a need
for MARS ops at the base and I volunteered along with several others. We
did several weddings over the air. Ran calls as far out as Cu Chi in the
perimeter ran some calls to Australia for some of the visiting
entertainment groups. Ran some calls for planes in flight. Ran one call
for someone who claimed to have rushed home from a ball game to get the
call must have been psychic. Ran some calls in Dutch, Russian, etc ( have
to listen for that OVER!) Ran Red Cross calls both outgoing and from the
USA. Delivered many MARS grams. Was inundated by guys trying to call home
on Mother's Day. (Couldn't get thru as all the USA circuits were busy)
various other calls that people somehow need that go beyond the mandate,
such as serious wounds, etc they get to talk beyond the 3 min limit and
get help with that pesky "Over" at the end of transmission.
Felt like I helped
do some good but don't see much evidence of it. Hopefully the MARS calls
experience was lasting, especially for those who may have lost someone.
