CWO4 Ron
Verschuyl, USNR (Ret.) , 74, of Woodinville passed away Friday night,
September 16, 2005
due to cancer. He was one of four sailors serving in the Naval Reserve
under special permission. He also served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and
Navy/Marine Corps Military Affiliated Radio Service (MARS).
Ron, who spent
24 years as a paid Navy reservist, continued to work in the reserve
center's high-security communications section. He kept his electronics
skills current through interests in several ham radio networks he ran from
his home.
His enthusiasm
for serving his country was rooted in his days as a refugee before
immigrating to the
United States.
"When I was in trouble, a displaced person, and didn't have anything,
America helped me to have an opportunity. I got that opportunity. I want
to pay this country back for that," he said.
Indonesian and
Dutch by birth, Ron was forced out of his homeland when the former Dutch
East Indies won independence and become
Indonesia.
Displaced to the Netherlands, he served in the Royal Dutch Army for seven
years. In 1960, he realized his dream of coming to the United States under
the sponsorship of Woodland Park Presbyterian Church. Ron joined the US
Navy in 1967.
We will miss
him smiling at the Ham Swap meets and we wish him fair winds and following
seas.
Post-cremation
memorial service open to all hams: October 14th at 1 PM in the Tahoma
Military Cemetery, Kent.
