I was the genesis of the
motorcycles and the Frosty Mug traditions at RTW. I was, and still
am a rider, although its mostly sidecar rigs now. I had first met
Tom (Morrison) on the Rock prior to his retirement from the Corps.
He told me he planned to go to Barstow and marry a widow who owned a bar
called the Frosty Mug. I knew nothing about Barstow at the time but
received orders there when I rotated back to the world in May 68. I
was assigned to N0RTW after football in the fall of 68. Larry Wuergler was
CHOP and Jimmy Kuhl was the man who did it all. My primary MOS was
5931 (Ground Radar
Technician) and I didn't know anything
about MARS. I hadn't heard about it when I was in country in 67/68.
I have many fond memories of N0RTW and am sorry that Wurg and Capt. Kool
have passed. I was also good friends with Billy Biggs and it could
have been me with him when he had the accident since we rode that road
often on our bikes.
I hope Chris (Christianson)
is well. We had good times and he was the halfback on the football team.
He wore my suit when he married his wife Sandy. Sorry we didn't
serve together Dan, it would have been fun. Semper Fi, Bill.

When I first
reported to Barstow from 29 Palms, I had orders labeled "for duty with
MARS". Notwithstanding that, my first detail upon reporting
was to be assigned to mess duty. As a L/Cpl, I had to do that
first, then go to the range for qualification.
I reported to the
mess hall as ordered. On the first day, Bill Biggs showed up with Jim Kuhl
and explained to OIC that I was needed at the station to run schedules
(both phone and message traffic) from RVN. Most importantly, he had
already been to command, cleared it with the commanding general!!!! So,
L/Cpl Foster reported for duty with MARS. No mess duty, no rifle range (I
had just qualified anyway). Thank you Bill.
When we got back to
the station -that very day - my job was to do the lunch run; that was the
extent of my mess duty.
