Navy-Marine Corps MARS in Vietnam

"Those That March Behind Me"

By D L Borgman

I've heard the whiz of bullets

That sharp popping -

Snapping by my head

Hoping they'd keep missing

Instead of leaving me for dead.

War has wrenched my soul

And I have screamed in anguish

As friends died in my arms

It's tough to keep on going

When the only way is Harm's.

But Marines had filled

Those shoes before me

Thru endless nights and days

So I just kept on fighting

I know why a soldier prays.

I've earned my peace

But tears crease my cheeks

For I remember well

Those that march behind me

Are now living in that hell.
