Larry Winlund, WA6OQO, was introduced to the MARS program while serving as a flight crew member for the Navy stationed at Tan San Nut Air Base, RVN, in 1965. He volunteered my services at the station in his spare time. Once separated from the Navy in 1967, He spearheaded an effort to establish a MARS station at the Autonetics Division of North American Aviation, Inc., Anaheim, California, his place of employment. An Air Force MARS station was established, AFC6YPX, and was manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by employees and the general public. Their assigned duty was to provide phone patches for service personnel. The company funded the acquisition of equipment and provided access to their WATS (wide area telephone service) lines free of charge to the calling parties. The station operated through the end of the Vietnam war (1975). They received several commendation from the Air Force including one for "Outstanding Service..." for completing over ten thousand phone patch calls in a one month period. One out of four attempted calls are completed. He obtained a Navy MARS license (NNN0YPK) for his personal station during the Persian Gulf conflict and ran radio teletype traffic during 1991 and 1992.
