Charles Raymond Faulkner, M.D., Somerset, Kentucky died Sunday July 28, 2002 at the Eastern Kentucky Veteran’s Center, Hazard, Kentucky.

Charles Raymond Faulkner, was born in Montgomery County, KY., June 29, 1913, the son of Dr. Morton and Lura Hanks Faulkner.

Dr. Faulkner attended public school in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Wishing to follow in his father’s footsteps he did pre-med work at the University of Kentucky and from there went to the University of Louisville Medical School where he graduated in 1938.

A year before graduating from medical school the former Virginia Greenwade of Mt. Sterling became Mrs. Charles R. Faulkner, and they had a child, Barbara, in 1939. Following graduation, he served his internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington. He then practiced medicine in Hazard, Kentucky.

With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Dr, Faulkner volunteered to serve his country. He was a Lieutenant-Commander in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy.

When the war came to an end, he returned to Hazard and worked three years as the company doctor in a mining camp. Another three years were spent in private practice in Albany, before settling down in Somerset.  Dr. Faulkner first located in an office over Tibbal’s Drug and in 1960 the doctor and his wife moved into the Doctor’s Building on Bourne Avenue, where they remained until retirement in 1972.

He was a member of the Kentucky Medical Association, Somerset Masonic Lodge No. 111, a lifetime member of the Pulaski Outdoorsman Club and the National rifle Association; a member of the American Radio relay League, lake Cumberland Amateur Radio Club, and a 40 year member of the Military Affiliate Radio System. He was a military historian, and had many hobbies which included Ham Radio, gardening, bridge, photography, shooting, hunting and fishing. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the First Christian Church in Somerset.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Greenwade Faulkner, nephews, Jame Ralls, Eddie (Betty) Ralls, and John Hedrick nieces, Ruth Ann Henry and Barbara Fizer.

He was precede in death by a daughter, Barbara Faulkner Bell, two brothers, Lemming and William Faulkner; four sisters, Shirley Arthur, Ruth Ralls, Zelma Hedrick and Lydia Faulkner.

Funeral services will be held at Morris and Hislope Funeral Home, July 31, 2002 with Rev. Joseph K. Altman, Senior minister officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday July30, 2002 at the funeral home. Masonic Services will be conducted at the funeral home at 7:00 P. M. by Somerset Masonic Lodge #111. He will be buried at the Somerset Cemetery with military honors by American legion Post #38 following the ceremony.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday July 30, 2002 from 6:30 P. M. until 8:30 P. M., with Masonic Services to be conducted by Somerset Lodge #111 at 7:00 P. M.  

Memorial may be made to the Alzheimer’s respite Center of Pulaski County or the First Christian Church Building Fund.
