1st Signal Battalion

DaNang, RVN 1968 - 1973

Did basic at Ft. Bliss, TX Training Command (E-2-2 2/69 to 4/69).   Went to Ft. Monmouth, NJ for my AIT in Satellite and Tropo communications.  After completing AIT (MOS 26V20) arrived in country at Long Binh in September ’69.  Assigned to the First Signal Brigade, shortly after was re-assigned / attached to HHC 101st ABN in Phu Bia (I Corps) as tactical field communications specialist.  (Seemed radio troops were in short supply, so much for all that strategic training on Long Haul Gear, ANG-66, AN/TRC-66 and Syscon ELM Tropo equipment).   From Phu Bai I TDY / worked communications with the Eagles at Hue and Camp Eagle, passed Eagle traffic to Fire Bases and beyond.

January ’70 re-assigned/attached to the First Signal Brigade I Corps HHC in DaNang, by now my primary MOS was 05C40/crypto and secondary 26V40.  As time passed seemed there was a surplus of radio troops and managed to get assigned to the DaNang Army MARS station, call sign AB8AAT.  There we routed troop calls to the World.  Returned to the World via Cam Ranh Bay in October ’70 where I was assigned to Ft. Huachuca, AZ.  Again had the opportunity to serve my remaining time as station NCOIC for Army MARS AA7USA. (My personal call was AL5CIU, issued by Headquarters Sixth U.S. Army).   I separated from active duty in December ’71 (early out).

Later took advantage of my GI Bill and earned my BSEE (electrical engineer) degree.

The antenna farm that I engineered and built at Ft. Huachuca, Az is still standing. The 100 meter "V” antenna help facilitate communications between Ft. Huachuca and RVN.
